- Miller-Gatenby, Katherine J, and Michele Chittenden. 2000. "SECTION 6: SERVING DIVERSE POPULATIONS: DISABLED PATRONS AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS - Reference Services for All: How to Support Reference Service to Clients with Disabilities - Ideally, when clients come in to the library, reference staff should be able to focus on their information needs and be distracted by the disability. Questions like "How will he get in the building?", "How can she use the catalogue?" and others, become important because they indicate barriers to the use of the library by persons with disabilities. If these are not addressed on an organizational level, they affect the individual with the disability, the service provider, i.e,, the reference librarian, and the quality of the service provided. The premise of this article is that the library has a responsibility to address barriers to service for persons with disabilities, and to support reference staff so that they can concentrate on the information need and not be distracted by the client's disability. The kinds of barriers will be addressed based on where they occur: In signage throughout the library, in the reference area including the reference desk, in the collection and in services offered, which includes web sites and bibliographic instruction. A list of electronic and print resources is included". The Acquisitions Librarian. 12 (24): 313.
